Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

If you’re asking what can cause the bananas to ripen faster, the main factor is ethylene gas.

Bananas naturally produce ethylene as they ripen. Exposure to more ethylene—especially from other ripe fruits—can speed up the process.

🍌 What makes bananas ripen faster?

  • Warm temperatures — heat accelerates ripening.

  • Ripe apples, pears, avocados, and other ethylene-producing fruit nearby.

  • Keeping bananas in a closed container or plastic bag can trap ethylene and speed ripening.

  • Bruising or damaged areas can cause faster deterioration.

The viral “one kitchen item” trick is generally plastic wrap around the banana stems. It may slow ripening somewhat by reducing ethylene movement, but it doesn’t reliably make bananas last exactly 10 days longer.

For maximum shelf life, keep bananas at room temperature until ripe, then refrigerate them. The skin may turn dark, but the edible fruit can remain good for several additional days.
