Bananas Last 10 Days Longer When Stored with One Kitchen Item Instead of in a Fruit Bowl

If you’re referring to the viral banana-storage tip, the “one kitchen item” is usually plastic wrap (cling film).

🍌 How to make bananas last longer

Bananas release ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening. A commonly recommended trick is to wrap the banana stems tightly with plastic wrap. This can reduce ethylene exposure around the stem and may slow ripening somewhat.

For better results:

  • Keep bananas away from other ripe fruit, especially apples, pears, and avocados.

  • Once they’re at your preferred ripeness, refrigerate them. The peel may turn brown, but the flesh generally stays usable longer.

  • Keep them somewhere cool and away from direct sunlight.

  • A banana hanger can prevent bruising, but it isn’t a magic preservation method.

One caveat: “10 days longer” is not a reliable universal result. Ripening depends on temperature, banana variety, starting ripeness, and storage conditions. Wrapping the stems may modestly extend their usable life, but it won’t guarantee an extra 10 days.
