Are your eyes getting worse, you’re gaining weight, you’re full of toxins? Here’s what you need to eat!

“Are your eyes getting worse, you’re gaining weight, you’re full of toxins? Here’s what you need to eat!” — What’s actually true?

This headline combines several different health claims, and “full of toxins” is a red flag. Your body already has organs—including the liver and kidneys—that process and eliminate many waste products. There isn’t a particular food that “detoxes” the body.

👁️ For eye health

A varied diet containing leafy greens, colorful vegetables, fruits, eggs and fish provides nutrients important for eye health. Vitamin A is particularly important for normal vision, and foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots, spinach, eggs and dairy products provide vitamin A or its precursors.

But eating carrots or another “superfood” won’t reverse worsening eyesight or eliminate the need for glasses. New or worsening vision changes deserve an eye examination.

⚖️ What about weight gain?

There isn’t a single food that reliably causes weight loss or “flushes out toxins.” Sustainable weight management generally comes from the overall eating pattern, appropriate calorie intake, physical activity, sleep and other lifestyle factors.

A useful approach is to emphasize vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans, lean proteins and healthy fats, while limiting highly processed foods and excess added sugars.

🚫 Don’t take “detox” literally

Juices, special teas and supplements marketed as “detoxes” aren’t necessary for a healthy person, and some concentrated supplements can actually be harmful. For example, excessive preformed vitamin A can cause toxicity, including headache and blurred vision.
