Aneurysm: signs you shouldn’t ignore…

An aneurysm is a weakened area in the wall of a blood vessel that can bulge and, in some cases, rupture. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms until they become large or rupture, which is why certain warning signs should be taken seriously.

Possible warning signs that should not be ignored

1. Sudden, severe “worst headache of your life”

  • A sudden explosive headache can be a warning sign of a ruptured brain aneurysm and requires emergency care.

2. Sudden neurological changes

  • Face drooping
  • Weakness or numbness on one side
  • Trouble speaking
  • Confusion
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness

3. Eye-related symptoms

  • Sudden vision problems
  • Pain around the eye
  • A drooping eyelid or enlarged pupil (possible with some brain aneurysms)

4. Chest, back, or abdominal pain

  • Aortic aneurysms may cause deep, severe pain in the chest, back, or abdomen, especially if a rupture or tear occurs.

5. A pulsating feeling or lump

  • Some abdominal aortic aneurysms may cause a pulsing sensation in the abdomen.

Call emergency services immediately for:

  • Sudden severe headache
  • Fainting or collapse
  • Sudden severe chest, back, or abdominal pain
  • Signs of stroke

Risk factors that can increase aneurysm risk include high blood pressure, smoking, older age, family history of aneurysms, and certain inherited conditions.

If you are asking because of a specific symptom (for example headache, chest pain, abdominal pulsation, or dizziness), tell me what is happening, when it started, and your age, and I can help you understand how urgent it may be.
