Aneurysm: Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

An aneurysm is a weakened area in an artery that bulges outward. Many aneurysms cause no symptoms until they become large or rupture, so there isn’t always an obvious warning.

🧠 Possible signs of a brain aneurysm

An unruptured brain aneurysm can sometimes cause:

  • Persistent or worsening headaches
  • Pain around or above one eye
  • Double or impaired vision
  • Dizziness or balance problems
  • Numbness or weakness on one side of the face
  • Difficulty speaking or concentrating
  • Short-term memory problems

🚨 The most important warning sign

A sudden, extremely severe headache—often described as a thunderclap headache—can indicate that a brain aneurysm has ruptured. It may occur with vomiting, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures, or stroke-like weakness. This is a medical emergency.

🫀 Abdominal aortic aneurysm

These often produce no symptoms. When symptoms occur, they can include persistent abdominal or back pain or a pulsing sensation in the abdomen. Sudden severe abdominal or back pain, especially with fainting, pale skin, or difficulty breathing, can indicate rupture and requires emergency treatment.
