Pain on the Left Side of the Body: What Could It Mean?

Left-sided pain does not automatically mean a heart problem. The possible causes depend heavily on where the pain is, what it feels like, how suddenly it began, and what other symptoms are present.

❤️ Chest, shoulder, arm, or upper-back pain

This is the situation that deserves the most caution. A heart attack can cause discomfort in the center or left side of the chest, and the discomfort may spread to one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach. Shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, or lightheadedness can also occur.

Call your local emergency service immediately if you have new or unexplained chest pain—especially pressure, squeezing, or tightness—or pain accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, faintness, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, neck, or back. Don’t drive yourself.

Other possible causes

Depending on the location, left-sided pain can also come from:

  • Muscles, ribs, or joints — strain, inflammation, or injury
  • Nerves — irritation or compression can cause burning, tingling, or shooting pain
  • Stomach or intestines — gas, indigestion, constipation, or other gastrointestinal conditions
  • Kidney or urinary tract — particularly pain toward the left flank or back
  • Lung or lining around the lung — especially when pain worsens with breathing or coughing
  • Shingles — burning or painful sensitivity that may precede a rash
