Here’s What Really Happens When You Sleep with Socks On

If you’re wondering whether sleeping with socks on is actually good or bad, for most people it’s completely safe—and it may even help you sleep better.

What happens when you sleep with socks on?
Your feet warm up. Warm feet can help your body increase blood flow to the skin and release heat, which is part of the natural process of lowering core body temperature before sleep.
You may fall asleep faster. Some small studies have found that warming the feet can shorten sleep-onset time and improve sleep measures.
Cold feet may become less uncomfortable. This can be particularly helpful if your feet tend to feel cold at night.
It won’t “stop circulation” as long as the socks aren’t tight. Loose, breathable socks are preferable.
Your feet can get sweaty. Moisture trapped in socks can encourage skin irritation or fungal growth, especially if you already have sweaty feet.
What kind of socks are best?

Choose clean, loose-fitting, breathable socks—cotton or moisture-wicking materials are good choices. Avoid tight elastic bands or compression socks unless a healthcare professional has recommended them for you.

So, despite some dramatic claims online, there’s no general health danger from sleeping in socks. If you find them comfortable, there’s no need to take them off simply because it’s bedtime.
