Don’t EVER use magnesium if you’re on any of the following medications

That headline is too absolute. Magnesium does interact with several medications, but in many cases the solution is separating the doses, not avoiding magnesium altogether. Some people—especially those with kidney disease—also need medical guidance before taking magnesium supplements.

⚠️ Medications that can interact with magnesium

Certain antibiotics
Tetracyclines (such as doxycycline) and fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin) can bind to magnesium and have their absorption reduced. They generally need to be taken separately.

Levothyroxine
Magnesium-containing products can reduce absorption of this thyroid medication. Taking them at different times is usually recommended.

Bisphosphonates
Medicines such as alendronate can have reduced absorption when taken with magnesium.

Some osteoporosis medications
Other mineral-containing supplements can interfere with absorption of certain oral medicines, so follow the specific medication instructions.

Certain diuretics (“water pills”)
Some diuretics can increase or decrease magnesium levels. Supplementation may therefore require monitoring rather than automatic avoidance.

Medications affected by kidney function
If your kidneys don’t work properly, magnesium can accumulate in the body. This is particularly important with magnesium-containing laxatives or antacids.

One more thing: check your other products

Magnesium is found in many antacids, laxatives, multivitamins, and mineral supplements. Combining several products can unintentionally give you a high dose.

Don’t stop a prescribed medication because of this list. If you tell me the exact medication name, dose, and type of magnesium supplement, I can explain whether there’s an interaction and how far apart they generally need to be taken.
