Throw beef patties and mushrooms in the crock with gravy mix, and get a dinner so delicious it tastes like an old-school diner classic.

Slow Cooker Salisbury-Style Beef Patties with Mushrooms and Gravy

A simple crockpot dinner with tender beef patties, mushrooms, and rich onion gravy. It has the comforting flavor of an old-school diner meal and requires very little hands-on work.

Ingredients

  • 1½ lb (680 g) ground beef
  • 1 packet (about 1 oz/28 g) dry onion soup mix
  • 1 packet (about 1 oz/28 g) brown gravy mix
  • 8 oz (225 g) mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 cup (240 ml) beef broth
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Form the patties: Divide the ground beef into 5–6 portions and shape them into oval patties. Don’t make them too thin.
  1. Brown the beef: Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the patties for about 2–3 minutes per side. They don’t need to be fully cooked because they’ll finish in the slow cooker.
  1. Prepare the gravy: In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, gravy mix, onion soup mix, flour, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and black pepper.
  1. Layer the slow cooker: Place the sliced onions and mushrooms in the bottom of the crockpot. Arrange the browned beef patties on top.
  1. Add the gravy: Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the beef and mushrooms.
  1. Cook: Cover and cook on LOW for 4–5 hours or until the beef reaches a safe internal temperature of 160°F (71°C).
  1. Thicken if necessary: If the gravy is thinner than you’d like, transfer it to a saucepan and simmer for a few minutes, or use a small cornstarch slurry.

Serving suggestions

Serve the patties and mushroom gravy over:

  • Mashed potatoes
  • Egg noodles
  • White rice
  • Buttered pasta

For a classic diner-style plate, add mashed potatoes and green beans on the side.

Recipe tip

Browning the patties before putting them in the slow cooker isn’t absolutely necessary, but it adds considerably more flavor and gives the finished dish a richer, more savory gravy.
