How to Wash Yellowed Pillows: 3 Tips to Keep Them White and Fresh
Yellowing is usually caused by sweat, body oils, saliva, and other residues soaking through the pillowcase over time. The good news is that many washable pillows can be cleaned and brightened. (Good Housekeeping)
1. 🧺 Check the care label first
Before washing, check whether your pillow is machine-washable, hand-washable, or spot-clean only. Memory-foam and some specialty pillows should not be put in a washing machine. (Sleep Foundation)
2. ✨ Treat the yellowing before washing
For washable white or light-colored pillows, pretreat noticeable stains with an appropriate oxygen-based stain remover or laundry detergent, following the product instructions. Avoid experimenting with strong chemicals or mixing cleaning products.
Then wash according to the pillow’s care label, preferably using a gentle cycle and an extra rinse if recommended. (Clorox™)
3. ☀️ Dry it completely
Thorough drying is extremely important. A damp pillow can develop unpleasant odors and potentially mildew. Use the drying method and temperature specified on the care label; for machine-dryable pillows, low or appropriate heat and periodic fluffing can help maintain their shape. (Tom’s Guide)
Keep pillows whiter for longer
- Wash pillowcases regularly.
- Use a washable pillow protector beneath the pillowcase.
- Don’t put a pillow back on the bed until it is completely dry.
- Follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions rather than assuming every pillow can tolerate hot water or bleach.
Important: Don’t use chlorine bleach unless the pillow’s care instructions specifically permit it. Different fillings and fabrics can react very differently to cleaning products.
Bottom line: The safest three-step formula is check the label → pretreat appropriately → wash and dry thoroughly. This is much safer than viral “miracle” whitening mixtures.
