High Blood Pressure + High Cholesterol: 3 Morning Habits to Avoid
There isn’t a special set of “dangerous morning habits” unique to people with both conditions. However, a few common routines can work against good cardiovascular health.
1. 🥓 Starting the day with a high-sodium, processed breakfast
Bacon, sausage, ham, processed breakfast sandwiches and other highly processed foods can be high in sodium and saturated fat. Too much sodium can raise blood pressure, while saturated fat raises LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
Better: Try oatmeal with fruit and nuts, or whole-grain toast with vegetables and a source of lean protein.
2. ☕ Having a large amount of caffeine before checking your blood pressure
Caffeine can cause a temporary increase in blood pressure in some people. If you’re measuring your BP at home, avoid caffeine, exercise and smoking for about 30 minutes beforehand so your reading is more representative.
You don’t necessarily need to eliminate coffee. The 2025 hypertension guideline advises limiting caffeine to under 300 mg/day and being particularly cautious with higher intake when hypertension is severely uncontrolled.
3. 💊 Skipping prescribed medication because you feel fine
High blood pressure and high cholesterol often have no noticeable symptoms, so feeling well doesn’t mean treatment is unnecessary. Take medications exactly as prescribed and don’t change the dose or stop them without speaking with your healthcare professional.
🌅 A better morning routine
A heart-friendly breakfast emphasizes vegetables and fruit, whole grains, healthy protein, fiber and unsaturated fats, while limiting sodium, added sugar, saturated fat and highly processed foods.
