“Put 4 drops in your ear and you’ll hear like new again!” — Is it true?
Not necessarily. Four drops of an ear-cleaning solution can sometimes improve hearing if the problem is a buildup of earwax, but there is no universal drop that restores hearing “like new.”
🟡 If earwax is the problem
Olive oil or specially formulated earwax-softening drops can soften impacted wax and allow it to leave the ear naturally. Some NHS guidance recommends a few drops for several days when wax is causing hearing problems.
But hearing loss can have many other causes—including ear infections, damage to the inner ear, age-related hearing loss and other conditions—and ear drops won’t reverse those.
⚠️ Don’t put drops in your ear if:
- You have or suspect a perforated eardrum
- You have ear tubes/grommets
- You have significant ear pain, discharge or bleeding
- You’ve recently had ear surgery
- You suspect an ear infection without professional advice
And don’t use cotton buds or other objects to dig out the wax; they can push wax deeper and injure the ear.
🚨 One important exception
Sudden hearing loss—especially in one ear—shouldn’t be treated at home with ear drops. It needs urgent medical assessment, because some causes are time-sensitive.
