The “healthiest” banana depends on what you’re looking for. There isn’t one stage that’s best for everyone.
- 🟢 Green banana: Higher in resistant starch, which behaves somewhat like fiber and is digested more slowly. This can be a useful choice if you’re particularly concerned about blood-sugar response or want more resistant starch. (Cleveland Clinic)
- 🟡 Yellow banana: A good everyday choice—softer, sweeter, and still nutritious. As bananas ripen, some of their starch is converted into sugars. (Cleveland Clinic)
- 🟤 Brown/spotted banana: Generally sweeter because more starch has converted to sugar. It isn’t “bad” or unhealthy simply because it’s spotted, although it may produce a somewhat quicker blood-sugar response than a less-ripe banana. (Cleveland Clinic)
So which should you choose?
For more resistant starch: green.
For a balanced everyday snack: yellow.
For sweetness and softness: ripe/spotted brown.
The viral claim that one color is universally “the healthiest” is therefore misleading. All three can fit into a healthy diet. (PubMed)
One practical point: green bananas can be harder to digest and may cause bloating in some people, so don’t force yourself to eat them just because a social-media post calls them healthier.
