Grandma’s Mashed Potatoes: The Creamy, Buttery Side Dish That Steals the Show …. Newark Wayne Comnty Hosp Gift

The headline “Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good” is somewhat sensationalized. Being over 65 does not mean daily showering is harmful. The bigger issue is that aging skin tends to become drier and more sensitive, so hot water and harsh soaps used every day can cause problems.

What can happen with overly frequent or harsh showers?

  • Dry, itchy skin: Hot water strips natural oils from the skin.
  • Skin irritation: Strong soaps and vigorous scrubbing can damage the skin barrier.
  • Cracking: Very dry skin can develop small cracks that are uncomfortable and may increase susceptibility to irritation or infection.
  • Dizziness: Very hot showers can cause blood vessels to widen and may make some people lightheaded, particularly if they already have low blood pressure.
  • Falls: Wet, slippery bathroom surfaces are an important fall hazard, especially for someone with balance problems.

A gentler routine after 65

You don’t necessarily need to stop showering every day. Instead:

  1. Use warm/lukewarm rather than very hot water.
  2. Keep showers relatively short.
  3. Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser, especially on areas that need it.
  4. Avoid vigorous scrubbing.
  5. Gently pat your skin dry.
  6. Apply a fragrance-free moisturizer immediately afterward.
  7. Use a non-slip mat or shower seat if there’s any risk of falling.

If your skin is healthy and you enjoy a daily shower, there’s generally no reason to avoid it solely because of your age. The goal is to protect the skin and prevent falls, not to stop bathing.

If you have persistent itching, unexplained rashes, skin sores, or repeated dizziness during showers, those symptoms deserve medical evaluation.
