If you’re looking for the seven warning signs, it’s important to distinguish symptoms that can indicate an emergency from symptoms that can have many less-serious causes.
7 signs your heart may be in serious trouble
-
Chest pressure, squeezing, or pain
Especially if it lasts more than a few minutes, keeps returning, or feels like heaviness or tightness. Heart attacks don’t always cause dramatic pain. -
Shortness of breath
Unexplained breathlessness—particularly at rest, with chest discomfort, or with minimal activity—can signal a serious heart or lung problem. -
Pain spreading to the arm, shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or upper abdomen
Heart-related pain isn’t necessarily confined to the chest. -
Sudden cold sweating, nausea, or vomiting
These can accompany a heart attack, particularly when they occur together with chest discomfort or breathlessness. -
Fainting or nearly fainting
Passing out can sometimes result from an abnormal heart rhythm or another cardiovascular problem and shouldn’t be ignored, particularly if it occurs during exertion. -
New, rapid, or irregular heartbeat with weakness or dizziness
Palpitations accompanied by faintness, chest pain, or shortness of breath deserve urgent evaluation. -
New swelling in the legs or rapidly worsening breathlessness
These can be signs of fluid retention associated with heart failure, especially when accompanied by difficulty breathing when lying down or waking up breathless.
🚨 When it’s an emergency
If you or someone else has chest pressure/pain, severe shortness of breath, fainting, or symptoms suggesting a heart attack, seek emergency medical care immediately. Don’t drive yourself if you’re seriously unwell.
Also, heart attacks can present differently in women, older adults, and people with diabetes—sometimes with fatigue, nausea, breathlessness, back pain, or jaw discomfort rather than classic chest pain.
One important point: having one of these symptoms doesn’t automatically mean your heart is in danger. But symptoms that are new, severe, sudden, or getting worse should be taken seriously.
