Who Is Most at Risk of Night Cramps?

If you mean nighttime leg cramps, they can happen to anyone, but some people are more likely to experience them:

  • Older adults, particularly people over 60.

  • Pregnant people, especially later in pregnancy.

  • People who exercise heavily or overuse their leg muscles.

  • People who stand or sit for long periods.

  • Those who become dehydrated or have significant electrolyte disturbances.

  • People with certain conditions, including diabetes, kidney disease, nerve disorders, or circulation problems.

  • People taking certain medications, such as some diuretics or cholesterol-lowering medicines.

Most nighttime leg cramps are harmless and aren’t necessarily caused by low potassium or magnesium.

If cramps are frequent, severe, newly occurring, or accompanied by leg swelling, weakness, numbness, or persistent pain, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional.
