Surprising Uses of Vicks VapoRub You Probably Didn’t Know About

Vicks VapoRub is marketed primarily as a topical cough suppressant and temporary muscle/joint ache rub. Online lists often give it dozens of “surprising” uses, but many aren’t well supported by evidence.

Uses that make sense

  • Cough relief: Applied to the chest and throat as directed on the label, its vapors can provide temporary relief from cough associated with a cold.

  • Minor muscle and joint aches: It can provide a temporary soothing sensation when rubbed onto affected areas, according to product labeling.

  • Cold-related comfort: The mentholated vapors can make breathing feel easier even though they don’t actually clear a blocked airway.

Viral uses to be skeptical about

You’ll often see claims that VapoRub can cure toenail fungus, eliminate warts, remove scars, heal cuts, stop headaches, or repel insects. Evidence for these uses is limited or inconsistent, and some can delay proper treatment.

Important safety points

Don’t put it inside your nose, mouth, eyes, or on broken skin, and don’t swallow it. It also shouldn’t be used on young children unless the product labeling specifically permits it. Keep it away from children because camphor-containing products can be dangerous if swallowed.

So there are a few legitimate uses, but VapoRub isn’t a universal remedy. For unusual conditions such as fungal infections or warts, it’s better to use a treatment proven for that condition.
