How to loosen and clear phlegm naturally
Phlegm is your body’s way of clearing irritants and secretions from the airways. The goal is usually to thin it and help your body clear it, rather than trying to eliminate mucus completely.
-
Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Warm drinks such as tea or broth can also soothe the throat.
-
Use a clean cool-mist humidifier if the air is dry. Clean it regularly.
-
Take a warm shower to help soothe irritated airways. Avoid very hot steam because it can cause burns.
-
Try honey in warm water or tea for cough and throat irritation. Don’t give honey to children under 1 year.
-
Use saline nasal spray/rinse if mucus is coming from the nose or sinuses. For nasal irrigation, use distilled/sterile water or water that has been boiled and cooled.
-
Stay gently active. Walking can help mobilize chest secretions.
-
Avoid smoking and vaping, which can increase airway irritation and mucus.
-
Don’t repeatedly forcefully clear your throat. Sip water and swallow instead; frequent throat-clearing can perpetuate irritation.
When phlegm needs medical attention
Seek urgent care for significant difficulty breathing, chest pain, coughing up blood, blue/gray lips, or severe weakness.
If phlegm or coughing persists for several weeks, repeatedly returns, or comes with fever, wheezing, unexplained weight loss, or persistent hoarseness, arrange a medical evaluation.
And remember: yellow or green phlegm doesn’t automatically mean you need antibiotics. The color alone can’t reliably determine the cause.
