How to remove scratches from glasses and restore their new, shiny appearance: a simple recipe

Can you really remove scratches from eyeglasses?

Unfortunately, there’s no safe household recipe that can reliably remove scratches from prescription lenses. Scratches are physical damage to the lens surface or its coatings, and polishing them away can distort the lens or remove protective coatings.

Avoid these viral “scratch removers”

Don’t use:

  • ❌ Toothpaste

  • ❌ Baking soda

  • ❌ Car wax or polish

  • ❌ Glass-cleaning chemicals

  • ❌ Abrasive powders

  • ❌ Sandpaper or polishing compounds

They may temporarily make a tiny scratch less noticeable, but they can damage anti-reflective, UV, or other lens coatings and potentially make vision worse.

What you can safely do

For ordinary dirt or smudges:

  1. Rinse the lenses with lukewarm water.

  2. Use a small amount of lotion-free dish soap or an eyeglass-safe cleaner.

  3. Gently clean with clean fingertips.

  4. Rinse and dry with a clean microfiber lens cloth.

If the lenses are genuinely scratched, the safest solution is usually replacement lenses. An optician can determine whether the scratches are superficial or whether the lenses need replacing.

Tip: Store glasses in a hard case and avoid placing them lens-down. This prevents many scratches in the first place.
