Are you an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph? Discover your body type and how to make the most of it.

Ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph?

These three labels come from the somatotype concept:

  • Ectomorph: Traditionally described as relatively lean, with a narrower frame and difficulty gaining body mass.

  • Mesomorph: Traditionally described as having a more muscular, athletic build and gaining muscle relatively easily.

  • Endomorph: Traditionally described as having a rounder or broader build and tending to gain body fat more readily.

The important catch

These aren’t scientifically reliable categories for determining your metabolism, ideal diet, or exercise program. Most people don’t fit neatly into one type, and body composition is influenced by genetics, age, hormones, activity, diet, sleep, and many other factors.

So rather than choosing a diet based on “body type,” focus on your actual goal:

To gain muscle:

  • Progressive resistance training

  • Adequate protein

  • Enough total calories

  • Consistent sleep and recovery

To lose body fat:

  • A sustainable calorie deficit

  • Protein- and fiber-rich foods

  • Resistance training to preserve muscle

  • Regular physical activity

To maintain health:

  • A varied diet with vegetables, fruit, whole grains, legumes, protein sources, and healthy fats

  • Regular aerobic and strength exercise

Your body type doesn’t determine what you’re capable of achieving. Your training, nutrition, genetics, and consistency matter much more than whether someone calls you an ectomorph, mesomorph, or endomorph.
