8 Plants that Help Repel Mice, Spiders & Other Insects

8 plants that may help discourage mice, spiders & insects 🌿

Some strongly scented plants contain compounds that may repel certain insects, but plants alone generally won’t eliminate an established infestation. Evidence is also much stronger for some essential oils than for simply having the living plant nearby.

  1. Peppermint — Its strong scent may discourage some insects and rodents, although placing a potted plant indoors isn’t a reliable mouse-control method.

  2. Lavender — Its fragrance may help deter some moths and insects.

  3. Basil — The aromatic oils in basil may have insect-repellent properties.

  4. Rosemary — Its strong aroma may discourage some insects.

  5. Mint — Other mint varieties are aromatic and may make an area less attractive to some insects.

  6. Lemongrass — Contains aromatic compounds related to those found in citronella and may help repel mosquitoes.

  7. Marigolds — Their scent and compounds have been studied for effects on certain insects, although results vary.

  8. Catnip — Contains nepetalactone, which has demonstrated insect-repellent activity in research.

🐭 What about mice and spiders?

Don’t rely on plants to control either one. For mice, sealing holes and gaps, removing accessible food, and using appropriate traps are much more effective. For spiders, reducing insects (their food source), sealing entry points, and keeping clutter to a minimum can help.

Also remember that “natural” doesn’t automatically mean safe. Some plants can be toxic to pets or children, and concentrated essential oils can be hazardous if swallowed or improperly applied.

If you tell me whether your main problem is mice, spiders, mosquitoes, cockroaches, or ants, I can give you the most effective non-toxic ways to deal with it.
