If you’re dealing with sciatica-related leg pain, gentle movement can sometimes reduce symptoms and improve mobility. Stop any exercise that clearly worsens the pain, causes increasing numbness/weakness, or sends pain farther down the leg.
1. Knee-to-Chest Stretch
- Lie on your back with both knees bent.
- Slowly bring one knee toward your chest.
- Hold for 20–30 seconds, then relax.
- Repeat 2–3 times per side.
2. Gentle Piriformis Stretch
- Lie on your back with your knees bent.
- Place the ankle of the painful side over the opposite knee.
- Gently draw the supporting thigh toward your chest until you feel a mild stretch in the buttock.
- Hold 20–30 seconds and repeat 2–3 times.
3. Gentle Sciatic Nerve Glide
- Sit upright on a chair.
- Slowly straighten the affected leg while looking slightly upward.
- Then bend the knee again while gently bringing your chin toward your chest.
- Perform 8–10 slow repetitions.
- This should feel like gentle movement—not a strong stretch or sharp pain.
Important: Sciatica has different causes, and an exercise that helps one person can aggravate another. Seek medical attention promptly for new or worsening leg weakness, numbness around the groin/saddle area, or difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels.
