8 Habits to Avoid or Change If You Take Amlodipine
Amlodipine is a calcium-channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure and prevent angina. Most people can take it safely for long periods, but a few everyday habits can increase side effects or make blood-pressure control more difficult.
1. 🚫 Don’t stop it on your own
Even if your blood pressure readings improve, don’t suddenly stop amlodipine unless your prescriber tells you to. Stopping can allow your blood pressure to rise again.
2. 🍺 Don’t drink excessive amounts of alcohol
Alcohol can increase the blood-pressure-lowering effect of amlodipine and make dizziness or low blood pressure more likely.
3. 🍊 Be cautious with grapefruit
Guidance differs between sources: the NHS currently advises avoiding grapefruit and grapefruit juice because they may increase amlodipine side effects, while older FDA labeling found no significant effect on amlodipine exposure. If you regularly consume grapefruit, check your own medication leaflet or ask your pharmacist, especially if you take other medicines.
4. 💊 Don’t routinely take NSAID painkillers without checking
Frequent or high-dose use of ibuprofen, naproxen and other NSAIDs can cause kidney problems and may interfere with blood-pressure treatment. Ask a pharmacist or doctor which painkiller is appropriate for you.
5. 🧂 Don’t make a very salty diet a habit
Amlodipine lowers blood pressure, but a diet consistently high in sodium can make blood-pressure control more difficult. Reducing heavily salted and highly processed foods is generally beneficial.
6. 🦶 Don’t ignore persistent ankle swelling
Swollen ankles, feet or legs are a common side effect of amlodipine. If swelling is persistent or troublesome, tell your doctor rather than simply discontinuing the medication.
7. 🚗 Don’t ignore dizziness
Dizziness is a recognized side effect. If you’re dizzy or sleepy, don’t drive or operate machinery until you feel well again.
8. 🌿 Don’t add supplements or herbal remedies without checking
Some medicines and herbal products—including St John’s wort—can interact with amlodipine. Tell your pharmacist or doctor about vitamins, supplements and herbal products you’re taking.
🚨 When to seek medical advice
Contact your healthcare professional if you develop persistent or troublesome side effects, particularly significant swelling or dizziness. Severe difficulty breathing, swelling of the face/throat, fainting, or severe chest pain requires urgent medical attention.
