7 Warning Night Symptoms Of High BLOOd Sugar

7 Nighttime Symptoms of High Blood Sugar

High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can cause symptoms at night, although these symptoms can also have other causes. If they occur repeatedly, checking your blood glucose and discussing the pattern with a healthcare professional is worthwhile.

  1. Frequent nighttime urination — excess glucose causes the kidneys to pull more water into the urine.
  2. Excessive thirst or a very dry mouth — often follows increased urination and fluid loss.
  3. Waking with a headache — dehydration or overnight glucose fluctuations can contribute.
  4. Restless or disrupted sleep — thirst, urination, and discomfort can repeatedly wake you.
  5. Night sweats — these aren’t specific to high blood sugar and can also occur with low blood sugar, medications, infections, or hormonal changes.
  6. Fatigue on waking — poor sleep and persistently elevated glucose can both contribute.
  7. Blurred vision — significant changes in blood glucose can temporarily affect the eye’s focusing ability.

Don’t rely on symptoms alone

Some people with diabetes have high blood sugar without noticeable symptoms. A glucose meter or, when appropriate, a continuous glucose monitor provides much more useful information.

If you have diabetes and develop very high glucose together with vomiting, abdominal pain, rapid/deep breathing, severe weakness, confusion, or unusual drowsiness, seek urgent medical care. These can be signs of a serious hyperglycemic emergency.

If you tell me whether you have diabetes and what your nighttime or morning glucose readings are, I can help you understand what they mean.
