10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg You Should Know

🦵 10 Warning Signs of a Blood Clot in the Leg

A blood clot in a deep vein is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). It often occurs in one leg and can sometimes travel to the lungs, causing a potentially life-threatening pulmonary embolism. (nhs.uk)

Possible warning signs

  1. Swelling in one leg
  2. Pain or tenderness without an obvious injury
  3. Throbbing or cramping pain, often in the calf or thigh
  4. A heavy or aching feeling in the affected leg
  5. Warm skin over the painful area
  6. Red, blue, or darker-colored skin
  7. Swollen or more prominent veins
  8. Pain that becomes noticeable when walking or standing
  9. Sudden unexplained swelling around the calf, ankle, or foot
  10. A combination of several symptoms affecting one leg rather than both legs. (nhs.uk)

Important: DVT can sometimes cause few or no symptoms, so the absence of swelling or pain doesn’t completely rule it out. (Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust)

🚨 Know the emergency signs

If you have possible DVT symptoms and develop sudden shortness of breath, chest pain (especially when breathing deeply), coughing up blood, a very fast heartbeat, severe lightheadedness, or fainting, seek emergency medical care immediately. These can indicate a pulmonary embolism. (nhs.uk)

A blood clot cannot be reliably diagnosed from symptoms alone. Medical assessment and tests such as an ultrasound may be needed. (CDC)

Bottom line: New, unexplained one-sided leg swelling, pain, warmth, or discoloration deserves prompt medical attention—especially after surgery, hospitalization, prolonged immobility or long-distance travel.
