10 Early Signs of Dementia You Should NEVER Ignore

10 Early Signs of Dementia

Dementia is not a normal part of aging. The biggest concern is a persistent decline that begins interfering with everyday independence.

  1. Memory loss that affects daily life — repeatedly forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or events.

  2. Repeating questions or stories without realizing it.

  3. Difficulty planning or solving problems — such as managing familiar finances or following a familiar recipe.

  4. Difficulty completing familiar tasks — routine activities suddenly become confusing.

  5. Losing track of time or place — including becoming lost in a familiar location.

  6. Difficulty finding words or following conversations.

  7. Frequently misplacing things and being unable to retrace where they were put.

  8. Poorer judgment — new problems with money, safety, or decision-making.

  9. Withdrawal from hobbies or social activities that were previously enjoyed.

  10. Persistent changes in personality, mood, or behavior that are unusual for the person.

Not every memory problem is dementia

Similar symptoms can result from poor sleep, depression, medication side effects, vitamin B12 deficiency, thyroid problems, hearing or vision loss, infections, and other medical conditions. Some are treatable.

One important distinction: sudden confusion developing over hours or days is not typical dementia. It can be delirium caused by an infection, medication, dehydration, or another acute problem and needs prompt medical assessment.

If these changes are progressively worsening or interfering with daily activities, arrange a medical evaluation rather than waiting for them to become severe.
