If you’ve seen the advice “don’t flush after every urination,” it’s mainly about saving water, not protecting your health.
Is it actually necessary?
-
No. There is no medical requirement to avoid flushing after urinating.
-
If you’re sharing a bathroom, have young children, are immunocompromised, or notice odor, flush normally.
-
If you’re trying to reduce water use, flushing less frequently can save water. A modern toilet uses substantially less water per flush than older models.
The saying “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” is therefore a water-conservation suggestion, not a health rule.
Also, don’t avoid flushing if urine or feces has contaminated the toilet or if doing so creates an unpleasant or unhygienic bathroom environment. Regular cleaning remains important.
