Why hang a clothespin above the shower: Once you know it, you’ll always do it!!

The viral clothespin-above-the-shower trick usually refers to turning a wooden clothespin into a simple shower aromatherapy holder. 🌿🚿

How it works

  1. Take a plain wooden clothespin.
  2. Put a few drops of an essential oil—commonly eucalyptus, lavender, or peppermint—onto the wood.
  3. Clip it somewhere in the shower where it will get splashed lightly, but isn’t directly under the strongest stream.
  4. The warm water and steam help release the scent as you shower.

The clothespin acts as a basic diffuser, so you can get a pleasant aroma without putting oil directly into the bathwater.

⚠️ A couple of important cautions

  • Don’t put essential oils directly on your skin unless they’re appropriately diluted and you’re sure they’re safe for you.
  • Keep the clothespin away from the drain and don’t let it become waterlogged.
  • Essential-oil aromas may feel refreshing, but claims that eucalyptus or peppermint steam “detoxes the lungs,” cures infections, or treats serious respiratory conditions aren’t established medical treatments.
  • If you have asthma or are sensitive to fragrances, strong essential oils can actually trigger coughing or breathing symptoms.

So the “secret” is basically a cheap, reusable shower scent diffuser—not a hidden medical treatment.
