Why Daily Showers After 65 May Do More Harm Than Good

Daily showers aren’t inherently harmful after 65, but aging skin tends to become thinner, drier, and less able to retain moisture. Frequent hot showers can therefore make certain skin problems worse.

What can happen

  • Dry, itchy skin: Hot water and frequent washing can strip some of the skin’s protective oils.

  • Irritation: Strong soaps, fragrances, and vigorous scrubbing can damage the skin barrier.

  • Worsening eczema or dermatitis: People who already have these conditions may notice more irritation.

  • Dizziness or falls: Very hot showers can cause blood vessels to dilate and may make some older adults light-headed, particularly if they are dehydrated or taking blood-pressure medications.

A gentler routine

You don’t necessarily need to stop showering every day. Consider lukewarm rather than hot water, keep showers relatively short, use a mild fragrance-free cleanser mainly on areas that need it, and apply a moisturizer soon after drying.

If you have persistent itching, unexplained rashes, skin cracks, or dizziness during showers, discuss it with a healthcare professional.
