What Those White Bits in Spam Actually Are

  1. If you mean the little white specks or chunks visible in canned SPAM, they’re generally fat.SPAM is made from pork and other ingredients, and some of the pork fat can separate during processing and cooling. As the product cools, the fat can solidify into small white or pale pieces.

    So, in most cases:

    • White, firm or waxy bits: usually solidified pork fat.
    • Small pale particles mixed throughout: can also be fat or other normal ingredients from processing.
    • Slimy, fuzzy, green/black, or foul-smelling material: not something to assume is normal; check the can for damage or spoilage and don’t eat it.

The white bits can look surprisingly strange, but fat separating from the meat is normal in a product like SPAM.
