What Is the Weird Gap Between Car Cup Holders For? (And Why It’s Actually Brilliant)

If you mean the small gap or slot between two car cup holders, it usually isn’t accidental. Its exact purpose depends on the vehicle, but common possibilities include:

  • Holding a phone — some center consoles intentionally leave a narrow slot for a smartphone.
  • Accommodating different cup sizes — the gap can allow the cup-holder arms or flexible inserts to move.
  • Storing small objects — coins, keys, cards, or other small items may fit there.
  • Allowing drainage/cleaning — some cup-holder designs have openings so spilled liquid can escape rather than pool.
  • Making room for a removable cup-holder insert — certain vehicles use the gap as part of the mechanism for adjusting or removing the holder.

There’s no universal purpose for the gap; car manufacturers design these consoles differently.

If you send me a photo of the gap or tell me the car’s make, model, and year, I can identify exactly what that particular opening is designed for.
