What Does the Color of Your Urine Say About Your Health?

Urine color can provide useful clues about hydration and some health conditions, but color alone cannot diagnose a disease.

Urine color What it may mean
🟨 Pale yellow Usually a sign of good hydration.
🟡 Dark yellow/amber Often means you’re dehydrated and may need more fluids, unless you’ve been told to restrict fluids.
💧 Very clear/colorless You may be drinking a lot of fluid. Persistently excessive thirst and very frequent urination deserve medical evaluation.
🟠 Orange Can occur with dehydration or certain medications and supplements; persistent orange urine should be checked.
🩷 Pink/red May result from foods such as beets, but can also indicate blood in the urine. Unexplained blood should be medically evaluated.
🟤 Brown/tea-colored Can occur with severe dehydration, certain medicines, liver problems, or muscle breakdown and warrants medical attention if unexplained.
🟢 Green/blue Uncommon; certain medications, dyes, or infections can cause this color.
☁️ Cloudy/milky May be caused by crystals, dehydration, urinary infection, or other conditions, particularly if accompanied by pain or burning.

🚨 When to pay attention

Seek medical advice if urine is persistently red, brown, or unusually colored without an obvious dietary or medication explanation, or if you have burning urination, fever, back/flank pain, abdominal pain, or a significant change in how often you urinate.

Bottom line: Pale yellow is generally reassuring, while darker urine commonly reflects concentration from dehydration. But unusual or persistent changes—especially blood-colored or brown urine—shouldn’t be dismissed based on color alone.
