Vinegar: The Key to Whiter Whites and Softer Towels? Here’s the Right Way
White vinegar can be useful in laundry, but it’s not a magic whitener. Its main benefit is helping remove detergent and mineral residue, which can make towels feel stiff.
How to use it
For towels: Add about ½ cup of distilled white vinegar to the washing machine’s rinse compartment during a normal wash.
For whites: Vinegar may help remove odors and residue, but for genuinely dingy whites, a laundry-safe oxygen bleach is generally more effective.
For a stronger odor treatment: Pre-soak washable items in water with a small amount of vinegar, then wash normally.
What people often get wrong
Never mix vinegar with chlorine bleach. The combination can produce dangerous chlorine gas. Also, avoid using vinegar on materials or appliances for which the manufacturer advises against acidic cleaners.
And don’t expect vinegar to replace detergent—it works best as an occasional laundry aid rather than your primary cleaning product.
