If you’re talking about a very dirty mop, you can often refresh it without replacing it. But there isn’t one magic ingredient that works for every mop.
A simple cleaning method
For a washable microfiber or cotton mop head:
-
Remove the mop head if possible.
-
Rinse out loose dirt with warm water.
-
Soak it in warm water with a small amount of laundry detergent for about 15–30 minutes.
-
For stubborn odors or buildup, you can add a small amount of white vinegar to the rinse water.
-
Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear.
-
Wash according to the manufacturer’s instructions and let it dry completely, preferably in a well-ventilated or sunny area.
Don’t mix vinegar with bleach or chlorine-containing cleaners. This can produce dangerous fumes.
If the mop head has mold, persistent foul odor, or heavy buildup that doesn’t wash out, replacing the head may be more hygienic than trying increasingly strong chemicals.
If you tell me what the “ingredient” in the viral tip is—baking soda, vinegar, bleach, salt, etc.—I can tell you whether it actually works and the safest amount to use.
