Why We Get Cramps at Night

Have you ever woken up suddenly with a painful leg cramp? Nighttime cramps happen when a muscle suddenly tightens and cannot relax properly. They may be caused by muscle fatigue, dehydration, sitting or standing for long periods, or staying in the same position while sleeping. Sometimes, low levels of minerals such as magnesium, potassium, or calcium may also play a role.

To help prevent cramps, drink enough water, stretch your legs before bed, and stay active during the day. If cramps happen often or are very painful, it’s best to consult a doctor.
