The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

Constant phlegm or a feeling of mucus stuck in your throat is usually caused by irritation or mucus draining from the nose or airways, rather than by “excess mucus” alone.

Common causes

  • Postnasal drip: Allergies, sinus inflammation, a cold, or nasal congestion can cause mucus to run down the back of the throat.

  • Acid reflux: Reflux can irritate the throat and cause mucus, coughing, throat clearing, or a lump-like sensation, even without obvious heartburn.

  • Allergies: Dust, pollen, mold, and animal dander can increase nasal mucus.

  • Smoking or vaping: These irritate the airways and can increase phlegm.

  • Respiratory infections: Colds and other infections can temporarily increase mucus.

  • Dry air/dehydration: Mucus can become thicker and harder to clear.

  • Asthma or chronic lung disease: Persistent phlegm accompanied by cough, wheezing, or breathlessness deserves medical assessment.

What you can do

  • Drink enough water throughout the day.

  • If nasal congestion or postnasal drip is present, saline nasal spray/rinsing may help.

  • Avoid smoking, vaping, and secondhand smoke.

  • If reflux seems likely, avoid large meals close to bedtime and identify foods that trigger symptoms.

  • Keep bedroom air comfortably humid if the air is very dry.

  • Try not to repeatedly forcefully clear your throat; this can further irritate it.

When to see a doctor

If the problem lasts several weeks, keeps returning, or is accompanied by persistent hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, fever, unexplained weight loss, wheezing, or shortness of breath, get evaluated.

Coughing up blood, severe difficulty breathing, blue/gray lips, or significant chest pain requires urgent medical attention.

If you tell me whether your mucus is clear, white, yellow, green, or bloody, and whether you also have a runny nose, cough, heartburn, or allergies, I can help narrow down the likely cause.
