How to Get Rid of Phlegm and Mucus in Chest and Throat Naturally

🌿 Natural Ways to Help With Phlegm and Mucus

There isn’t a natural drink or recipe that can literally “clean mucus out of the lungs.” Your airways naturally produce mucus to trap irritants, and coughing helps remove it. But you can make thick mucus easier to clear.

Drink plenty of fluids: Water and warm drinks can help keep mucus thinner.
Try warm honey water: Honey can soothe an irritated throat and reduce coughing. Never give honey to a child under 1 year.
Use humidified air: A cool-mist humidifier may help if the air is dry. Keep it clean to prevent mold and bacteria.
Take a warm shower: Moist air may temporarily make congestion feel easier.
Use saline nasal spray/rinse: Particularly helpful when mucus is coming from postnasal drip.
Avoid smoking and vaping: They can irritate the airways and increase mucus production.
Don’t forcefully suppress a productive cough: Coughing is one way your body clears mucus.
🚨 When to get medical help

See a healthcare professional if phlegm persists for several weeks, keeps worsening, or comes with fever, wheezing, unexplained weight loss, or persistent chest pain.

Coughing up blood, severe difficulty breathing, blue/gray lips, or severe chest pain requires urgent medical attention.

Also, mucus color alone—such as yellow or green—doesn’t reliably tell you that you need antibiotics.
