The Beautiful Mystery of the Lower Back: What Those Two Little “Dimples” Really Mean

Have you ever noticed two small dimples on either side of your lower back, just above the buttocks?

They’re sometimes called “Venus dimples” in women and “Apollo dimples” in men—and they can certainly look distinctive. But their meaning is much simpler than many viral posts suggest.

🦴 So what actually creates them?

These little indentations are related to the way the skin, connective tissue, and underlying pelvic anatomy are arranged around the back of the pelvis.

They tend to appear near the posterior superior iliac spines—bony points at the back of the pelvis.

Some people have clearly visible dimples, while others don’t. Genetics, body composition, skin structure, and the shape of the pelvis can all influence how noticeable they are.

💪 Do they mean you’re especially fit?

Not necessarily.

You don’t need to have these dimples to be healthy, athletic, or physically fit. And having them doesn’t indicate a particular body type or fitness level.

They can simply be a normal anatomical feature.

❤️ What about the viral health claims?

You’ve probably seen claims that these dimples reveal something about fertility, sexual health, circulation, or athletic ability.

There isn’t good medical evidence that the dimples themselves can tell you these things.

They’re primarily an anatomical variation—not a secret health test.

🌿 And that’s what makes them interesting
