The 6 foods that cause abdominal fat (visceral fat) that you should avoid

6 Foods That Can Contribute to Abdominal (Visceral) Fat

There isn’t a single food that automatically causes visceral fat. Excess calorie intake over time, combined with inactivity and other factors, is a major driver of weight gain. Some foods make it particularly easy to consume excess calories.

  1. Sugary drinks 🥤 — Soft drinks, sweetened tea, energy drinks, and other sugary beverages provide calories with relatively little fullness.
  2. Sweets and desserts 🍰 — Cakes, cookies, pastries, and candy can be high in added sugar and calories.
  3. Refined carbohydrates 🥖 — Large amounts of foods made with refined flour, such as white bread and many baked goods, can be easy to overeat.
  4. Processed meats 🌭 — Sausages, bacon, and similar foods can be calorie-dense and are best eaten in moderation for overall health.
  5. Deep-fried fast food 🍟 — Fried chicken, fries, and other fried foods can contain substantial amounts of calories and fat.
  6. Highly processed snack foods 🍿 — Chips, crackers, and packaged snack foods can combine refined carbohydrates, fat, salt, and strong flavors that make overeating easier.

What actually helps reduce visceral fat?

You don’t need to completely eliminate these foods. Focus on portion sizes and overall dietary patterns: eat more vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, and protein-rich foods; choose mostly unsaturated fats; drink water instead of sugary beverages; and stay physically active.

Even a modest reduction in overall body weight can reduce visceral fat and improve metabolic health. Belly exercises can strengthen abdominal muscles, but they can’t selectively burn visceral fat.
