Having a spoonful of honey before bed is generally safe for most adults, but many claims about it being a powerful nighttime remedy are overstated.
🍯 What might it do?
Soothe a cough: Honey has evidence for reducing cough symptoms, particularly during upper-respiratory infections. It may help you sleep more comfortably when coughing.
Provide a small amount of carbohydrate: Honey is primarily sugar, so it supplies quick energy rather than having a special overnight “healing” effect.
Possibly affect sleep indirectly: Some people find a small sweet snack relaxing, but strong evidence that a bedtime spoonful of honey significantly improves sleep is lacking.
It doesn’t “detox” the liver or burn belly fat: Those popular claims aren’t supported by good evidence.
A couple of cautions
Honey still counts as added/free sugar, so regularly taking a large spoonful before bed adds calories and sugar to your diet. If you have diabetes or are managing blood glucose, account for it accordingly.
And don’t give honey to babies under 12 months because of the risk of infant botulism.
Bottom line: A small amount of honey before bed can be enjoyable and may soothe a cough, but it isn’t a miracle nighttime treatment.
