If you’re seeing the headline “Remember that if you always sleep on your right side, you…”, the dramatic claims attached to it are usually misleading.

Sleeping on your right side is generally safe for healthy adults. However, sleeping position can affect certain conditions:

  • Acid reflux: The right side can worsen nighttime reflux for some people; the left side often reduces reflux.

  • Pregnancy: Side sleeping is generally recommended later in pregnancy. Either side can be used, although the left side is often comfortable.

  • Snoring and sleep apnea: Side sleeping can reduce airway obstruction compared with sleeping flat on your back for some people.

  • Heart disease: There is no general rule that everyone with heart disease must avoid sleeping on the right side. People should follow their clinician’s advice for their specific condition.

So, regularly sleeping on your right side doesn’t mean you’re damaging your heart or shortening your life. If you wake with chest discomfort, significant breathlessness, palpitations, or repeated choking/gasping, those symptoms deserve medical evaluation regardless of your sleeping position.
