…you may actually be influencing your heart, digestion, and circulation in unique ways! While sleeping on your side is generally great for keeping your airways open and reducing snoring, the specific side you choose matters due to how your internal organs are positioned.
Here is what happens when you regularly sleep on your right side:
  • Heart Health & Comfort: Some cardiologists note that sleeping on the right side can ease pressure on the heart for certain individuals (as the heart is nestled in the chest cavity and gravity pulls it slightly differently when turned right), and it is sometimes anecdotally preferred by those with certain heart conditions.
  • The Downside for Digestion: Unlike the left side—which keeps your stomach lower than your esophagus to naturally prevent acid reflux—sleeping on your right side can relax the lower esophageal sphincter. This makes it much easier for stomach acid to leak upward, potentially triggering heartburn or indigestion, especially if you ate close to bedtime.
  • Circulation: Right-side sleeping can promote smooth blood flow throughout the body, though pregnant women are typically advised to sleep on their left side to optimize blood flow to the fetus and prevent pressure on major veins.
Ultimately, while side sleeping supports overall rest, if you ever wake up with a sour taste in your mouth or a burning chest, shifting to your left side can make a noticeable difference.
Do you usually find yourself waking up on a specific side, or are you trying to adjust your sleep habits for a specific health goal?
