Put a Glass of Salt in Your Car, Here Is Why Every Driver Should Try It

Putting a glass of salt in your car: does it really work?

This is a popular car-care hack, but a glass of salt isn’t a magic moisture absorber or car freshener.

If the idea is to place an open glass or bowl of salt inside the car overnight, the salt may absorb some moisture, but its effect in a normal vehicle is limited. It won’t reliably prevent condensation, mold, or fogging.

🚗 If you’re dealing with moisture inside the car

A better approach is to:

  • Check for wet carpets or seats and dry them thoroughly.

  • Look for leaks around doors, windows, the windshield, or sunroof.

  • Make sure the air-conditioning system and cabin air filter are functioning properly.

  • Use the car’s defog/defrost setting when windows fog up.

  • Avoid leaving wet umbrellas, clothing, or floor mats inside.

  • For persistent humidity, use a commercial reusable moisture absorber designed for vehicles.

What about salt for bad smells?

Salt isn’t a particularly effective odor remover. If your car smells musty, the underlying moisture or source of the odor needs to be addressed glass of salt probably won’t hurt if kept stable and away from surfaces, but it’s not.

Also, don’t scatter loose salt around the interior. Moist salt can contribute to corrosion of metal components and damage some surfaces.

Bottom line: A glass of salt probably won’t hurt if kept stable and away from surfaces, but it’s not a reliable solution for car humidity or odors. Find and eliminate the source of moisture instead.
