Peace lily: thanks to this one ingredient, it will bloom for up to 10 years in a row.

That headline is overstated. There isn’t one magic ingredient that makes a peace lily (Spathiphyllum) bloom continuously for 10 years. Peace lilies can live for many years with good care, but flowering depends on several factors.

What actually helps a peace lily bloom

  • Bright, indirect light: Insufficient light is one of the most common reasons it doesn’t flower.
  • Consistent watering: Keep the soil lightly moist, but don’t leave the roots sitting in water.
  • Good drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix.
  • Moderate feeding: A balanced houseplant fertilizer during active growth can support flowering. More fertilizer isn’t necessarily better.
  • Warm temperatures and reasonable humidity: Avoid cold drafts and extreme temperature changes.
  • Remove spent flowers: Cutting old flower stalks back to the base keeps the plant tidy and redirects resources.

If a viral post recommends one ingredient such as sugar, rice water, coffee grounds, or baking soda, be skeptical. These aren’t guaranteed flowering treatments, and some homemade mixtures can encourage pests, mold, or salt buildup in the soil.

Bottom line: There is no reliable “10-year blooming ingredient”—consistent light, watering, nutrition, and general plant care matter much more.
