Peace lily: thanks to this one ingredient, it will bloom for up to 10 years in a row.

Peace Lily: The “One Ingredient” Trick Isn’t the Real Secret

There is no single household ingredient proven to make a peace lily bloom continuously for 10 years. Claims about adding sugar, coffee grounds, rice water, banana peels, or baking soda are usually exaggerated and can sometimes harm the plant.

For a healthy, flowering peace lily, focus on the basics:

Bright, indirect light: This is one of the biggest factors affecting flowering. Very little light can keep the plant alive but prevent blooms.
Water when needed: Wait until the upper portion of the potting mix has begun to dry, then water thoroughly. Don’t leave the roots sitting in water.
Good drainage: Use a pot with drainage holes and a well-draining potting mix.
Moderate feeding: During active growth, use a balanced houseplant fertilizer according to its label rather than adding an unmeasured kitchen ingredient.
Remove old flowers: Once a bloom has faded, cut the flower stalk near its base. This keeps the plant looking tidy and allows it to focus on new growth.
Don’t expect nonstop blooms: Peace lilies naturally flower in cycles. A mature plant can live for many years, but flowering frequency depends heavily on light, growing conditions, and the plant itself.
What about banana peels or coffee grounds?

Putting raw kitchen scraps directly into the pot isn’t a reliable fertilizer. They can encourage mold or fungus gnats and don’t provide nutrients in a form the plant can readily use.

The real “secret” is consistency: adequate indirect light + appropriate watering + drainage + occasional fertilizer. That’s much more likely to keep a peace lily healthy for years than a miracle one-ingredient recipe.
