One vitamin that opens blood vessels and improves circulation

One Vitamin That Can Affect Blood Vessel Function

You may have heard that vitamin B3 (niacin) “opens blood vessels.” There is some truth behind this claim, but it needs an important explanation.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin)

Niacin is an essential vitamin that helps the body convert food into energy. At higher doses, the form called nicotinic acid can cause temporary flushing because blood flow near the skin increases.

However, this flushing does not mean that niacin safely improves circulation throughout the body, and taking high-dose niacin without medical supervision is not recommended.

Don’t Take High-Dose Niacin on Your Own

Large doses can cause side effects such as flushing, itching, nausea, low blood pressure, and, at very high doses, liver problems. The recommended daily amount for adults is only about 14–16 mg, while the general upper limit from supplements is 35 mg per day unless a healthcare professional is supervising treatment.

Better Ways to Support Healthy Circulation

🚶 Stay physically active.
🥗 Eat a balanced diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and healthy proteins.
🚭 Avoid smoking.
💊 Control blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes when applicable.

Bottom line: Niacin can cause blood-vessel dilation in the skin, but it isn’t a miracle circulation treatment. Don’t use high-dose vitamin B3 supplements to treat poor circulation without medical advice.
