If you found tiny, moving, rice-like particles on or around a garbage can, don’t panic. Several things can look like grains of rice at first glance.
The most likely possibilities include:
Fly or other insect larvae/maggots — especially if the garbage contains food waste. Some larvae can be pale and grain-like.
Fly pupae — these can look like small brown or cream-colored grains and may be found around garbage.
Food debris with insects — spilled rice or other grains can attract small insects.
Moth or beetle larvae — possible if the garbage contains infested food.
Don’t touch them with bare hands. Keep children and pets away, take a clear close-up photo, and note whether they have legs, how they move, their color, and approximate size. Clean the bin thoroughly after removing the garbage.
If you upload a close-up photo, I can help you narrow down exactly what you’re looking at.
