If You Always Sleep on Your Right Side, What Should You Know?

There isn’t a specific food, vitamin, supplement, or drink that you “should have” simply because you sleep on your right side. Viral posts often exaggerate the effects of sleeping position.

However, your sleeping position can matter for certain conditions:

  • Acid reflux: Right-side sleeping can worsen reflux for some people. Sleeping on the left side may reduce nighttime reflux symptoms.

  • Shoulder or hip discomfort: Constant pressure on one side can aggravate pain or stiffness. Changing positions and using an appropriately supportive pillow may help.

  • Snoring or sleep apnea: Sleeping position can influence airway obstruction in some people. If you have loud snoring, witnessed pauses in breathing, gasping during sleep, or significant daytime sleepiness, talk with a healthcare professional.

  • Pregnancy: Sleep-position recommendations can differ during pregnancy, so follow your obstetric clinician’s advice.

If right-side sleeping is comfortable

You don’t need to change positions just because you sleep on your right side. There is no general medical requirement to sleep on the left side.

If you regularly wake with heartburn, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, numbness, or significant pain, the underlying symptom deserves attention rather than simply blaming your sleeping position.
