“New Method: Colonoscopy Will No Longer Be Invasive” — Is That True?
This headline is partly true but misleading. Newer methods can examine or screen the colon without a traditional flexible scope, but traditional colonoscopy has not been replaced.

CT colonography (“virtual colonoscopy”) uses CT imaging to create pictures of the colon. It is less invasive than conventional colonoscopy, but bowel preparation is still required and a small tube is generally used to introduce gas. GOV.UK+1

Colon capsule endoscopy involves swallowing a camera-containing capsule that travels through the digestive tract and eventually passes in the stool. It still requires bowel preparation and is not currently a universal replacement for colonoscopy screening. Cancer.gov

Stool-based tests such as FIT and newer stool DNA/RNA tests can be done at home without inserting anything into the colon. They’re screening tests rather than direct visual examinations. American Cancer Society+1

Blood-based screening tests are also becoming available. The American Cancer Society’s 2026 guidance includes them as an option for people who decline or don’t complete preferred stool-based or visual screening, but they currently have limitations compared with established tests. Why colonoscopy still matters
A conventional colonoscopy allows the doctor to see the entire colon, take biopsies, and remove polyps during the same procedure. With many alternative screening tests, an abnormal result still means you’ll need a conventional colonoscopy for confirmation or treatment. Cancer.gov+1
So the more accurate statement is:
Newer non-invasive and minimally invasive tests are giving people more ways to screen for colorectal cancer, but they have not made traditional colonoscopy obsolete.
