NEVER Use Magnesium If You Are Taking Any of the Following Medications

Taking Magnesium? Here Are the Medications You Should Know About

Magnesium is an essential mineral, but magnesium supplements can interfere with the absorption or effects of some medications. That doesn’t mean you must never take magnesium—it means timing and medical advice can matter.

1. Certain Antibiotics đź’Š

Magnesium can bind to some antibiotics, including doxycycline, ciprofloxacin, and levofloxacin, reducing how much of the medicine is absorbed.

Depending on the antibiotic, magnesium may need to be taken several hours apart. Follow your pharmacist’s instructions.

2. Oral Bisphosphonates

Medicines such as alendronate, used to treat osteoporosis, may not be absorbed properly when taken too close to magnesium.

They generally need to be separated by at least two hours.

3. Diuretics (“Water Pills”)

Some diuretics can increase magnesium loss through urine, while others can reduce magnesium loss. Your healthcare professional may need to monitor your magnesium level depending on the medication.

4. Long-Term Acid-Reducing Medicines

Some proton-pump inhibitors, such as certain medicines used for chronic acid reflux, can contribute to low magnesium levels when used for a prolonged period.

That doesn’t mean magnesium should automatically be added—your healthcare professional can determine whether testing or supplementation is appropriate.

5. Other Medicines and Supplements

Magnesium can interact with additional medicines and supplements. Even over-the-counter products such as magnesium-containing antacids or laxatives count toward your total magnesium intake.

What About Kidney Problems?

Extra caution is important for people with impaired kidney function because the kidneys normally remove excess magnesium. Very high magnesium levels can cause low blood pressure, weakness, difficulty breathing, abnormal heart rhythms, and potentially life-threatening complications.

Don’t Stop Your Medication

If you’re taking a prescription medicine, don’t stop it just because you’re considering magnesium.
